88th EFG Spring Council Meeting – Day 2

Ιούν 11, 2026 | Ημερίδες & Εκδηλώσεις

Day 2 of the 88th European Federation of Geologists Spring Council Meeting in Milos was dedicated to the first field trip, “Volcanic & Industrial Mineral Sites”, offering participants the opportunity to explore the island’s exceptional geological and mining heritage.

The day began with an introductory presentation by Dr Michael Stamatakis, followed by field visits during which participants observed bentonite stockpiling areas, perlite outcrops and former mining sites, zeolite-rich volcanic ash tuffs formed in shallow marine environments, and volcanic formations associated with hydrothermal alteration.

The programme also included visits to active pozzolana quarrying, crushing and loading facilities connected to the cement industry, including operations of the HERACLES Group, a member of Holcim.

The visits provided valuable insights into the geological evolution of Milos and highlighted the strategic importance of industrial minerals for sustainable development.

A sincere thank you to all contributors, guides and participants for another successful and highly informative day in Milos.
